In an event organized by Newton Indivisible, 570 people gathered in Newton Centre on January 10, 2026. They came to protest ICE abuses, as exemplified in Minneapolis by the apparent murder of Renee Good, a US citizen and mother of three. Many witnesses and Renee’s killer video-recorded the apparent murder, along with the circumstances leading up to and following it. Renee’s last words to her killer were “I am not mad at you.” Shortly thereafter, 10-year veteran ICE agent Jonathan Ross shot Renee point-blank three times. Ross then called Renee a “F***** Bitch,” as her vehicle crashed into a nearby car and telephone pole. Other ICE agents responded to the shooting by preventing a doctor on the scene from aiding Renee, as she lay bloody in her crashed vehicle. When paramedics reached Renee, she was unresponsive; resuscitation efforts were stopped before Renee reached the hospital.

Within hours of the apparent murder, DHS Secretary Noem, Vice-President Vance, and President Trump had already started to spread the lie that Renee Good was a domestic terrorist who had caused her own death. The FBI quickly seized control of the apparent murder scene. The FBI refused to allow state and local officials to participate in any investigation of the shooting and denied them access to relevant evidence. Deputy Attorney General Blanche asserted that “there is currently no basis for a criminal civil rights investigation” into the ICE agent who killed Renee Good. The head of the DOJ division that would normally investigate told her DC staff that she would not consider opening an investigation into whether the ICE agent who killed Renee Good had violated federal law. Leaders in that division announced they would be leaving the DOJ. And after the DOJ’s reluctance to investigate the killer became clear, six federal prosecutors working in Minnesota resigned. In the meantime, whereas the Minneapolis Police Department has about 600 officers, DHS has now deployed about 2,000 ICE agents from out of state to Minneapolis. The Pentagon has directed 200 Texas National Guard and 1,500 active-duty military personnel to prepare for possible deployment to Minnesota.

Protesters at the “ICE Out for Good” event in Newton Center refuse to allow the administration’s propaganda to become accepted reality. A recent poll reported that 91% of US citizens have seen recordings of the tragedy. According to an Economist/YouGov Poll, by a margin of 20 points, more Americans view the ICE shooting in Minnesota as not justified than justified. “ICE Out for Good” protesters want elected politicians to understand that they must act now to rein in ICE and prevent further deaths and abuses.
Both Fig City News and the Newton Beacon reported on this event. Newton Mayor Marc Laredo understands. In a speech at the event, he vowed “to uphold democracy and fight the forces of fascism in this country.” The fight is personal for Laredo, whose parents escaped fascist regimes during World War II. Newton Indivisible invites our neighbors everywhere to join our resistance.
