Quote of the Week

“To say you have no choice is to relieve yourself of responsibility.”
–Patrick Ness, Monsters of Men

Elections Action Team

Join us this Thursday, May 21st at 7:00 p.m., as we prepare to carry the torch of the civil rights movement this summer and defend voting rights. Participate in a kickoff training call for the national “Good Trouble Lives On” Weekend of Action that will happen Friday, July 17th through Sunday, July 19th. If you’re not already fired up over the recent Supreme Court decision eviscerating voting rights in the Callais case, please read one or both of these articles:

…and then head over to our list of actions to choose how you will fight for free and fair elections!

Laughtivism Action Team

Express yourself! We have a few spots left for performers (no experience, only a sense of humor, necessary). Get your calendar out: on Saturday, May 30th, at 2:00 p.m. and again at 4:00 p.m. the Laughtivism Action Team will present the “Fascism Fashion Show” and “Let’s Get This Stain Out for Good,” but wait, there’s more! This all happens in a backyard in Newton Centre as part of Newton Open Studios. Rain date: Sunday, May 31st. Email us for more info: laughtivism@newton-indivisible.org.

Newton Bridge Brigade Action Team

Sign up to help us reach our nationwide goal of messaging from 1,000 overpasses on D-Day Democracy Day (June 6th). We especially invite veterans and artists to contribute and participate. This will be the biggest Visibility Brigade nationwide action yet. We will engage millions while honoring those who fought fascism long ago on the beaches of Normandy. We are out at several locations weekly. Visit the Bridge Brigade Action Team page for groups, dates, locations, and how to join one of the local Signal chats to stay up to date on these actions.

Rallies Action Team

We will hold our 61st RESIST standout in Newton Centre Green at the intersection of Beacon and Center Streets on Saturday from noon to 1:00 p.m. We request that photographers introduce themselves before taking any pictures. Bring your own signs. Check out The Big List of Protest Signs for ideas. Contact rallies@newton-indivisible.org for more information; registration is optional.

Commonwealth Advocacy Team

Tell your legislators to say NO to negotiating with corporate extortionists and NO to any deal with them. Corporate CEOs are trying to scare the legislature into a backroom deal to cut taxes for millionaires and corporations. These CEOs are still mad about the passage of the Fair Share Amendment. They chipped in a few more cents per dollar on their income over a million, and we were able to fund universal school meals, free community college, and more. They want to get rid of all of this and more. Further explanation and script for communication included in the above link.

Register for a virtual phone bank this Wednesday, May 20th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., to tell your legislators not to negotiate with extortionists.

And now that both the Massachusetts Senate and House have each passed their own version of the PROTECT Act (see the details HERE and HERE), encourage Senator Cynthia Stone Creme, as the Senate majority leader, to bring the strongest possible version of the act up for a vote. And further urge Creme to get the final version of the bill to the governor as soon as possible.
