“In the long term, institutions really can’t save us; civil society and mass mobilization are a more potent check on a backsliding democracy.”
— Erica Chenoweth, author of Why Civil Resistance Work
This Saturday is No Kings Day: Noon to 1:30 p.m. in Newton Centre!

Afroman demonstrates the power of laughtivism

Humor is a powerful resistance tool! To pay for damage resulting from a home raid that produced no evidence of a crime, rapper Afroman created music videos mocking the officials involved. For example, watch Lemon Pound Cake on YouTube. The Adams County, Ohio, Sheriff’s Office countered with a defamation lawsuit that demonstrated the Streisand Effect by calling international attention to Afromans music videos. Right-wing bigot Ben Shapiro calls Afroman hilarious, and even Fox News calls Afroman a free speech warrior.
LUCE immigrant justice hotline fundraiser on Thursday evening

Join a virtual discussion on Thursday, March 26, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. on defending immigrant dignity and rights and advancing a humane and just immigration system. Register for this event to receive the Zoom link.
Speakers: Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, MA 7th District (Keynote); Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell; Dlida Rocha, Executive Director of Neighbor to Neighbor; An individual who was detained by immigration agents.
If you’re unable to attend, please support LUCE with a donation. Funds raised will keep the LUCE hotline and rapid response lifeline strong and help us resist authoritarianism and defend our rights.

Elections Action Team

This week, we are meeting at Clover Food Lab in Newtonville to write postcards to encourage voters in Virginia to pass a redistricting referendum. We are also getting a head start on flipping Pennsylvania’s 7th congressional district by talking to voters about their concerns and voting attitudes. Learn more and get involved with our actions this week by visiting the Elections Action Team page.
Commonwealth Action

Demand intervention to permanently prevent Massachusetts from adopting the recent federal tax cuts for the rich and corporations. Learn why Massachusetts stands to lose $664 million in tax revenue by default. Use this phone script or letter-writing tool to share the demand with Governor Healey and your state legislators.
