Last Saturday, we held a special rally to honor the legacy of Congressman John Lewis, to protect voting rights, and to protest voter suppression laws.

Governor Healey Prioritizes Prison Expansion
Governor Healey approved $361 million for a new prison complex at the MA Correctional Institution-Framingham, the state’s only prison for women. This plan was made without any review of the alternatives to incarceration allowed by current laws or addressing the current cost of $256,220 per woman per year when many have no place to go upon release. Should Massachusetts prioritize prison expansion now?

Good News about Citizens Bank
Last week, Citizens Bank announced it would no longer extend credit to The GEO Group and Core Civic, companies running ICE detention facilities. The De-ICE Citizens Bank Coalition, which has been organizing nationwide protests against Citizens for months, called the decision a “huge win.”
Newton Resists ICE
On Wednesday, July 29 at 7:30 p.m., at Newton City Hall, come hear our City Councilors respond to our recent public demands about Newton’s response to ICE. This is the follow-up to the April 15th public hearing when many of us spoke up for more protection for our residents, workers, and visitors against ICE. Please wear something yellow so we are visible to the Council!

Laughtivism Action Team
After our successful debut at the Wokestock Festival in Allston we are going to focus our creativity on saving the elections. Your homework, if you choose to accept it, is to keep your eyes out for cartoons, articles, quotes, and actions that are inspiring and funny related to the elections. We will bring them together and brainstorm at our next meeting on Wednesday, August 12th, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in person at our regular meeting place in Newton Centre.
