Quote of the week

“We are seven months away from the most consequential midterm election in the history of the United States. Meanwhile, we are fighting a war. These are the structural conditions for a coup attempt in which a president tries to nullify elections and take permanent power as a dictator. If we see this, we can stop it, overcome the movement that brought us to this point, and make a turn towards something better.”

— Timothy Snyder, History Professor, University of Toronto, from The Next Coup Attempt

Mobilize for May Day

The third No Kings was a historic success, with eight million protesters turning out to oppose the Trump regime. What’s next? Organizers are looking at May Day, May 1st, as an opportunity to forge solidarity and flex economic power by mobilizing a nationwide general strike: no work, no school, no shopping, backed by Indivisible and hundreds of labor and clergy groups.

As Indivisible co-founder Leah Greenberg sees it, the aims are simple: We demand a government that invests in our communities, not one that enriches billionaires, fuels endless war, or deploys masked agents to intimidate our neighbors.

Find out more and register for an organizing call on Thursday, April 9. 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Visit MAY DAY STRONG to learn more.

Auchincloss Action Team

Rep. Seth Moulton rejected his Palantir campaign contributions. What’s keeping Congressman Auchincloss from donating his $25,000 in Palantir campaign funding? The Hill reported this week that Massachusetts Congressman Moulton has already given away his Palantir campaign contributions. A campaign staffer for the Congressman stated, “We don’t want [Palantir co-founder Peter Thiels] money, and we don’t want his surveillance in our streets.” We are still waiting for Congressman Auchincloss to do the right thing and reject his campaign donations from the tech backbone that powers ICE raids (Paywall).

Despite his public opposition to ICE and votes to block funding for the Department of Homeland Security, Congressman Auchincloss gets more money from Palantir than most sitting members of Congress. He has received more than $25,000 in donations from Palantir, whose surveillance technology and data collection tools are actively fueling large-scale raids on immigrant communities and the war in Iran through billions in government contracts.

Please join us in demanding that Representative Auchincloss return these funds immediately. Take action or email him today. Let Representative Auchincloss know we are expecting him to align his actions with his policy positions.

Commonwealth Advocacy Team

Join a seminar on Privacy and Power: Protecting Our Digital Rights and Democracy on Wednesday, April 8, 7:00 p.m., via Zoom, RSVP here.

Currently, no federal or state laws prevent Big Tech companies from buying and selling our data, including sensitive data such as location, health information, or immigration status. But we have the opportunity to change that. The ACLU of Massachusetts and Progressive Massachusetts bring you this information. And it’s always a good time to contact your legislators.

Learn about The Montana Plan, a direct challenge to the federal Citizens United ruling, wherein the U.S. Supreme Court said that the power to spend money in elections is tantamount to free speech. In a state known for its outsized corporate influence in politics, organizers are pursuing this plan.

We, the people of Massachusetts, have the power to limit corporate spending and influence on our commonwealth elections. Why aren’t we working on a similar plan?
